A fingernail (toenail) is a hard envelope covering the tips of four limbs of mammals. Formed by hardened stratum corneum, it serves to protect the distal pulp of the fingertip from injuries, maintain its stability, increase the touch sensitivity at fingers, and assist the hands to grab, clasp, pinch, and squeeze objects, etc.

The hard part of the fingernail contains a tough protein called keratin. Keratin is synthesized by a variety of amino acids. The fingernail includes the components of protein, keratin, vitamins, minerals, and sulfur, etc.

The nail matrix responsible for the growth of the nail is covered underneath the skin. The nail above it is formed as the older nail plate cells are pushed forward bit by bit by new nail plate cells. Since the newly-formed nail is quite soft and cannot withstand external stimuli, it is protected by a layer of skin called “the cuticle” riding on the back of the nail plate. And like the hair, nails are made up of keratin and contain no living cells, so cancer cells won’t develop from them.
